About the Hebden Bridge Alternative Technology Centre
The Alternative Technology Centre (ATC) is a
not-for-profit organisation established in
1999 on the banks of the Rochdale Canal in Hebden Bridge. As an
educational resource centre, we aim
to make sustainability achievable and simply irresistible by working
from a strong base within our local community to provide
inspiration, accessible information and
advice to improve the quality of life using sustainable means –
economic, environmental and social.
The ATC involves
people with a variety of skills, both paid and on a voluntary
basis including fully qualified electricians, teachers and
lecturers, artists, gardeners, landscape architect, and people with
business skills of over 30 years standing. This creates a
knowledgeable, vibrant and creative workplace environment.
The ATC has just
undergone a refurbishment program, funded by Yorkshire Forward,
that has improved and added to the existing facilities –
creating a
new exhibition room - the One
Planet Living exibit around sustainable development – what it means and
how it can be achieved, using the concept that many little things
add up to a big thing.
The ATC is not a campaigning or political group. None of the Centre’s
facilities or services may be used for any political or campaigning purpose that
is not directly related to our aims and
objectives.
The ATC is managed by a board of directors (all volunteers!) who decide the
Centre’s broad policy decisions. All of our policies are available for
inspection in the volunteer/staff rest area. The SUS Co-operative carries out
the day-to-day running of the Centre. Most projects are managed by individual
co-ordinators. The funding for the Centre comes from local fundraising events,
donations from supporters, gifts in kind (from individuals and businesses),
local and national grant awarding bodies and the SUS Co-operative.
What is the SUS Co-operative?
SUS Co-operative is the trading arm of the ATC. It is a workers’
co-operative that employs the paid staff and manages the Centre.
